Power outage slows traffic

Motorist strikes utility pole, knocks out traffic signals

A signal knocked out during a weekend traffic collision was still inoperable Monday afternoon slowing traffic along Whites Canyon Road and Ranier Street in Canyon Country, a sheriff's official said.

A motorist driving on White Canyon Road lost control and struck a utility pole at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, said Lt. Tom Bryski of the Santa Clarita Sheriff's Station.

The accident is being investigated and no arrests were made, he said.

As the power pole tumbled, wires from the pole rubbed against each other and caused a short, said Chris Coronel, SoCal Edison regional manager. The short caused a power spike that jolted the traffic signal control box and rendered it inoperable, he said.

SoCal Edison restored power to residents Sunday afternoon, Coronel said. However, the traffic signal repairs were delayed as SoCal Edison waited on Santa Clarita Public Works staff to repair the traffic signal control box, he said.

"We have to wait until the control box is working before we can power the traffic signal," he said.

There was no estimate on when the city will complete repairs to the traffic signal, Coronel said.
