Working it out

Fitness clients make the most of a messy renovation project

Clients exercise in the parking lot of Results Fitness while the gym undergoes construction.

Results Fitness trainers and clients made the most of messy situation.

Although contractors vowed to be finished with renovations of the Newhall gym by Monday morning, owners Rachel and Alwyn Cosgrove, showed up to work at 5 a.m. to find fitness equipment covered in dust and an unfinished new juice bar.

The Cosgroves shifted classes and training sessions to the parking lot. When clients were told they would exercise outside, they were surprised but not angry.

"It was actually a nice change," said Stephanie Duggan, a dedicated attendee of the kettlebell class and waitress at the Egg Plantation. "We got to work out under the stars this morning. It was actually kind of cold."

Another positive aspect was clients trying out new equipment they haven't used before since the normal equipment wasn't functional due to dust.

"I loved the fact that there was more equipment than the kettlebells," said Angelina Weber, who usually attends the morning kettlebell class. The trainers brought out equipment from ropes to cardio machines and had their clients work out in circuits using the different equipment.

The clients seemed to enjoy the temporary change.

"Our motto is ‘We are the best part of our members day every day," Rachel said. "So everyone stayed positive and stuck to our motto."

Even 3 p.m. clients were willing to work out on the pavement but were not discouraged when sent home because of the heat.

The Cosgroves hosted classes as early as 5:30 a.m. in the small parking lot. The trainers set up a tent to provide some shade. Once the heat became too unbearable for outdoor classes, the trainers had to cancel with 22 clients after 3 p.m.

"Mondays are our busiest day but everyone has been really understanding," Cosgrove said.

The owners expected to host early morning classes today but expect to cancel with more clients this afternoon.

The gym has been in business for eight and a half years but the owners recently hired a contractor to renovate some areas, fix plumbing and add a new juice bar. Construction drapes, ladders, dust and tape gave no evidence of a finished juice bar Monday. The dust alone left unsafe breathing conditions for working out.

"Nobody called me this morning to tell me it wasn't done," Rachel said. The contractors called her yesterday at 5 p.m. and said it was "good to go."

After showing up three hours after the gym open, contractors told Crosgrove the delay was due to difficulties such as equipment failure.

"They gave no real excuse though," Rachel said. "They said they knew it would be messy - as if this was acceptable."
She chose not to reveal the name of the contractors.

The contractors promised to be done by today and Results Fitness will open again on Wednesday with a new juice bar, she said.
