Riding the arm of junior quarterback Jake Bernards, as well as the legs of RB Ross Bacon, the West Ranch Wildcats got the 2008 gridiron campaign off on the right foot with a 42-26 vicotry on the road against Lancaster Friday night.

And while the Wildcat offensive explosion was shocking enough, the real surprise was that most of it took place in the fourth quarter.

Rushing touchdown by Bacon, Spencer Ortega and Trent Yokovich, as well as a Bernards to Frankie Madero strike led West Ranch from a 20-14 deficit in the fourth to an amazing triumph.

Bernards, in his first game as starting field marshal, was 13-19 for 176 yards and three touchdowns, all to wide receiver Madero.

Meanwhile, Bacon rushed for 144 yards on just 14 carries and scored once.
