The following essays were submitted by fifth-grade students from Live Oak Elementary School.

First place
Devin Sims

In 2011, my goals are: to start being outside more; to get fit by playing sports such as football and basketball; to do a little better on my math by trying to understand the concepts more; score at least two touchdowns when playing flag football at the Castaic Sports Complex; and get up on my Accelerated Reader points for reading.

Also, I want to: start saving my money more instead of spending, whenever I get a couple of dollars; and get into more activities than flag football at the Sports Complex. Those are my goals in the wonderful 2011.

Second place
Jacob Manly

My New Year’s resolution is to get better at baseball and football.

I want to get better at baseball, because I want to play for a long time and even try to play in the Major Leagues when I’m older. I want to get better at football, because I play football at school, and every once in a while, I drop a pass or throw an interception. That is my New Year’s resolution.

Third place
Ian Seeley

For my New Year’s resolution, I will start working harder on my work and stop talking in class. I will also start being nicer to my friends and my pets. I will also start going outside and stop staying inside. I will start taking my pets outside more and let them fly around. And that is what I will do for my new year.

My New Year’s resolution is to go to Knott’s Berry Farm. I want to go there because it’s really fun. They have so many rides there. It’s so much fun, I can’t even explain it. My favorite ride is Supreme Scream. It’s not really a ride, but you go 360 feet in the air and drop. Thanks for listening to my New Year’s resolution.

Kaleb Quesada
My New Year’s resolution is to listen to my mom by not being a brat, picking up my dog’s poop, getting good grades in school and most of all, getting ready for bed at 8:30 p.m. so I can be in bed at 9 p.m. That’s mostly good for me so I don’t get tired for school. Anyway, that’s my New Year’s resolution. I wonder what will be my next New Year’s resolution?

Justin Ocuma
My New Year’s resolution is to do well in school. I want to do that by doing all my homework and projects.

After school, I would walk home from school and do my homework right away. When all my homework is done, I would read two chapters of my book from the school library.

On some weekdays, I would have practice at 5 and 6 p.m. Those practices would be on Monday and Wednesday.

I want to do my homework and projects, so I can show my parents that I am doing well in school. So that is my New Year’s resolution.

For my New Year’s resolution: I will not get in trouble; I will be nice to people I first meet; I will be nice to my parents; I will not play my PlayStation 3 a lot; I will help my parents, like when they cook food or when they do the laundry. This is my New Year’s resolution.

Kristina Blackledge
My New Year’s resolution is to be better in science. Science is important for your education. In fifth grade, they give you a grade, and mine is always a 1 or 2. This year, I will start studying for tests and start listening more, because if you listen more, the more you will know. Maybe if I do this I will get better grades. That’s my idea for a New Year’s resolution.

Cato Abraham
My New Year’s resolution is to help my parents around the house by cleaning up things.

Some things I will do to help clean up is taking out the trash, washing the dishes, vacuuming the house, feeding and walking the dog, helping out with the front yard and things like that.

By doing some of these things it will not only help my parents, but it will help me to be responsible and grow up to do these things when I get older and have my own house. This is my New Year’s resolution.

Nari Maloo
My New Year’s resolution is to keep my room in good condition.

In order to do this, I will have to make my bed blanket over the blanket and put my pillows side by side.

That’s not the only thing I will have to do. I will also have to keep my desk clean — like, keep it clear and organized.

Another thing is my TV area. There’s not much to do but to keep it neat. And that is my New Year’s resolution.

Kamari Hilton
My New Year’s resolution is to be a math expert when I get older.

My second resolution is to overcome my fears so I won’t be scared of them.

My third resolution is to do good in school, keep track of my school assignments, turn in projects on time and to get even better grades than I have now. Those are my resolutions.

Vanessa Lara
My New Year’s resolution is to read more. I am not a fan of books, but some are very interesting. Anyway, I want to read more to get smarter because knowledge is power. I can be smarter in sixth grade if I read. What is your New Year’s resolution?

Amanda Doucette
My New Year’s resolution is doing more of what I love most: writing. Writing is one thing I really love to do.
Once, I wrote a story about a dream I had!

When I was little, about 5 or 6, I wrote short, little stories.

I remember one was called “The Cat and the Dog.” When I was that little, I used to write them in notebooks so I’d have them forever. I actually still have some of them.

My essays have been published in The Signal’s Zone for Kids before. So if anybody has read them, they know they’re pretty long. That’s why I love writing!

When I was in third grade, a story that I wrote was based on my class, and me too!

My character’s name was Bambi Sulliven. The only reason this is my New Year’s resolution is because I have a very big imagination, and like I mentioned before, I used to write a lot when I was little. Did I mention Amanda loves to write?

Christos Stefanos

I want to rewrite my homework and get it right the first time, pay more attention to my parents and to make every day the best day ever by doing more and more things. I want this new year to be the best year I ever had. I’m done here, so have a happy new year!

Adam Goossen
My New Year’s resolution is to get better grades, better report cards and a better attitude. If I get these better, I could get a cell phone and more privileges, like Xbox on weekdays and a lot more. I hope I can do this over 2011. Go 2011, I hope it rocks.
