Stay Green was named one of the largest 150 landscape contractors in the nation. The company maintains the lush landscaping at the Westfield Valencia Town Center, one of its many clients in Santa Clarita and Southern California.

Stay Green Inc., a family-run company, began in the garage of Richard and Charlene Angelo’s San Fernando Valley home in 1970, with one truck, a handful of residential customers and a vision for providing the best landscape services anywhere.

Today, the company is headquartered in Santa Clarita, and has three business divisions — Landscape Maintenance, Plant Health Care and Tree Care. The company services clients throughout Southern California.

Stay Green was recently nominated for the Large Business of the Year award by the Santa Clarita
Valley Chamber of Commerce, and  it was named one of the largest 150 landscape contractors in the nation last year by Landscape Management magazine.

Maintaining revenues
Making the list of 150 top landscape contractors is no small feat: Landscape Management estimates there are 272,450 “green industry” enterprises nationwide.

The magazine noted Stay Green, by maintaining 2009 revenue levels that were consistent with the prior year, is among the industry’s leaders in surviving a down economy.

“Flat is the new up,” Editor-in-Chief Nicole Wisniewski wrote. “Growth was certainly the exception in 2009. Only 33 of the 150 Landscape Management companies reported growth, 18 broke even and the other 99 companies saw their sales drop.”

Stay Green CEO/President Chris Angelo agreed, saying his firm’s inclusion on the list is a testament to the hard work and professionalism of its more than 200 employees. Angelo is the son of Richard and Charlene.

One strategy the company employed to maintain revenue was focusing on its Landscape Maintenance division. The division grew by 9 percent this year and Angelo sees that as a great success in what has been a long recession.

“We believe our success is directly tied to the team we’ve built here at Stay Green,” Angelo said. “By building such a strong team, we have been able to not only keep up with industry trends and changing technologies, but also to get ahead of them.”

Environmentally friendly
Stay Green was among the first landscape-management firms to adopt environmentally friendly landscaping practices.
The company implemented computerized water-management systems, recycled trimmings for mulch and applied organic fertilizers and pest-control products to properties.

The landscape services company recently invested in new vans and equipment to create its new Water Management Services division, designed to help Stay Green customers improve their water use efficiency and promote healthy, beautiful landscaping at the same time.

Customer focused
Stay Green has achieved a 95-percent customer-retention rate and has received industry awards.

According to Chris Aldieri, general manager of the Hyatt Regency Valencia, the hotel saw a remarkable improvement in the overall condition of its property with Stay Green. Aldieri said the company’s service is responsive and professional at all times. He recommends Stay Green for a project of any size.

“In tough times, sticking to the basics of where one started really counts,” Angelo said. “It’s why we got into the business in the first place — or, for me, why my father founded it — and that’s to provide exceptional customer service.”

It’s more important to be connected to the client during tough times Angelo said. Stay Green does not lose sight of what the clients need, working with their customers to help them stick to their budgets.

Employee focused
The company also acknowledges that its employees have helped make them successful and has focused on the workers as well.

“The most difficult thing is morale in today’s economy,” Angelo said. “People we work side-by-side with are having financial challenges of their own, and it’s tough to keep their spirits up. We have employees whose spouses lost jobs and no longer have a dual income. That’s a reality for many.”

Stay Green does what it can to keep employees morale up by offering more company appreciation programs including a picnic for 400 or 500 people.

“We’re doing what we can to keep our employees motivated,” Angelo said.

Stay Green Inc is located at 26415 Summit Circle, Santa Clarita and be reached at (800) 858-5508. More information can be found at: www.staygreen.com
