Properties in the Santa Clarita Valley from becoming nests for crime, the city and the Sheriff’s Business Alliance are offering two free seminars on crime prevention for local landlords.

The SCV Rental Community Educational and Nuisance Abatement Team, or SCV RENT, will teach property owners and managers how to keep illegal activity out of their rental spaces.

“There’s so much that landlords can do to protect their property, their tenants and even their neighborhoods,” said Sgt. Ronald Shaffer of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The program is aimed at increasing public safety and strengthening property values, he said.

At the seminars, the speakers will go over a wide range of topics, including preparing property, applicant screening, rental agreements, ongoing management and crisis resolution.

The participants will also learn about warning signs of drug activity and the role of police in the rental process.

“With the help of landlords and property managers, we can preserve Santa Clarita’s great reputation as a safe place to live, work and raise a family,” Shaffer said.

SCV RENT is sponsored by the city of Santa Clarita, the Sheriff’s Business Alliance and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The program is available to the public at no cost. However, participants are required to attend both seminars, which will take place from 6-10 p.m. Jan. 24 and Jan. 31.

“We’re hoping everyone, from single-family-home landlords to managers of large multi-family properties, will take advantage of all the tools SCV RENT has to offer them. It’s great for the community’s safety and it’s great for business, too,” Shaffer said.

Space for the program is limited. Participants are asked to RSVP by contacting Shaffer at (661) 255-4990 or rtshaffe@lasd.org.

The seminars will be held in Council Chambers at Santa Clarita City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd.
