The city of Santa Clarita Sheriff's Business Alliance is launching a new initiative aimed at helping landlords and property managers prevent rental properties from becoming havens for crime.

SCV RENT - the Rental Community Education and Nuisance Abatement Team - kicks off with a free two-seminar educational program on Monday, Jan. 24 and 31 at 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall. Admission is free, but participants must attend both seminars.

RSVP by contacting Sgt. Ronald Shaffer of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station at (661) 255-4990 or rtshaffe@lasd.org.

Sponsored by the city of Santa Clarita, the Sheriff's Business Alliance and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the program is designed to educate landlords, property owners and property managers on ways they can keep illegal activity out of rental property.

"There's so much that landlords can do to protect their property, their tenants and even their neighborhoods," said Shaffer. "SCV RENT is being created to help our community's landlords keep their property crime-free, which is a win for public safety and for property values, too."

"In this two-session series we're going to cover a wide gamut of subjects," Shaffer said. "We'll cover everything from preparing the property through ongoing management - everything landlords need to make sure their rental properties are safe and crime-free."

The topics scheduled to be covered include:

* Preparing the property
* Applicant screening
* Rental agreements
* Ongoing management
* "Apartment watch" and promoting community
* Warning signs of drug activity
* Crisis resolution
* The role of police
* Section 8 housing vouchers
* CPTED: Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design

"With the help of landlords and property managers, we can preserve Santa Clarita's great reputation as a safe place to live, work and raise a family," Shaffer said. "We're hoping everyone, from individual home landlords to managers of large multi-family properties, will take advantage of all the tools SCV RENT has to offer them. It's great for the community's safety and it's great for business, too."

Santa Clarita City Hall is located at 23920 Valencia Blvd., Valencia 91355.
