A tie-breaking 3-pointer by John Otavka with 2.1 seconds remaining has the Valencia High boys basketball team in the CIF quarterfinals for the first time since 1998.

The Vikings, led by the senior's winner from the left wing on a kick-out from point guard Terrez Scott, beat Fullerton High 51-48 Tuesday night at Fullerton in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs. They will face Arroyo Valley next, an upset winner over No. 4 Pasadena. The two teams will meet Friday night in the Vikings' second-ever quarterfinal appearance.

"It's a great feeling," said Valencia co-head coach Rocket Collins. "We're enjoying it, let the excitement soak in and then we'll go from there and be ready to get back to business."

Otavka was Valencia's only double-digit scorer with 16. Dwayne Fells, who led Fullerton with 23 points, was nearly the hero, tying the score at 48 with 13 seconds remaining on a broken play.

Valencia nearly had a steal.

"The ball was in our hands and the game was ours and it bounced his way," Collins said.

But it didn't matter.

Scott penetrated, drew a double team and dished out to Otavka who calmly drained it.

A desperation heave from three-quarters court by Fullerton at the buzzer was no good.

"They came into the game 15-1 when they give up less than 50 points and 1-10 when they give up over 50," said Vikings co-coach Greg Hayes. "We hit the magic number."

The Vikings (21-7) had led early in the second quarter but a 13-0 run by Fullerton had the them trailing 29-28 at halftime.

Fullerton (16-12) led 39-32 with six minutes remaining, with the Vikings making their push back into the game just in time.
