For all Valencia's Christian Lopes has accomplished so early in his career, Friday night was the highlight of highlights.

The sophomore-to-be- was named to the USA under 16 baseball team, which is scheduled to play in the COPABE "AA" Youth Pan American Championships from Sept. 12 to Sept. 22 in Veracruz, Mexico.

"It felt great," said Lopes by phone from Miami. "I was kind of worried that I wouldn't be picked."

The shortstop is slated to be a utility infielder on the 19 man roster and also pitch.

Though he didn't pitch during the season for Valencia, Lopes said he expects not only to pitch for the USA team but also next year for the Vikings, where he'll most likely be a closer.

Lopes, who, leaves for Mexico on Monday is one of eight Californians on the team. Lopes said he's friends with the infielders, two of whom are from the Golden State.
