Hart school district board members Joe Messina and Steve Sturgeon will formally ask the Fair Political Practices Commission to look into fellow board member Gloria Mercado-Fortine’s potential conflict of interest in January, Messina said Thursday.

The William S. Hart Union High School District board members have hired an attorney who is gathering information to submit to the state political watchdog.

The two board members have raised concerns that Mercado-Fortine’s employment with Desert Sands Charter High School creates a conflict of interest when she votes on matters related to charter schools. Mercado-Fortine has denied any wrongdoing and insisted that her charter school employment is a “nonissue.”
