Cowboys face big test this week

Team takes on tough Bakersfield squad tonight at Harry Welch Field

Canyon quarterback Jordan Adamczyk will be relied upon to guide the Cowboys past a Bakersfield club that went 13-1 and won a CIF Central Section championship last season.

The Cowboys have a big test.

This one, however, will not be graded and they can't steal answers off their neighbor's paper.

The test comes at the hands of Bakersfield High.

Canyon will face the Drillers at Harry Welch Stadium tonight at 7:30 p.m.

A win against Bakersfield may prove that the Cowboys are on track to become a championship team again.

Bakersfield, the defending Central Section Division I champs, returns eight starters on defense from last season's title clinching team.

The Drillers squad has eight new faces on the offense, but Canyon's defense will have to be on point to stop Drillers running back Alfonso Jackson. Jackson has already received Division I recruiting interest and last season was awarded All-State Sophomore Team honors.

All-league honorees, running back Jerek Johnson, defensive lineman Tevin Jackson, defensive tackle Kenny Wallace and defensive end Emilo Cantu, will be the leading corps for Bakersfield.

However, Canyon head coach Chris Varner is very optimistic about the Cowboys' chances against the Southeast Yosemite League's undefeated team.

"We feel pretty good at this point," Varner said. "We like our chances here and I think the pressure's on them."

After a 4-6 campaign in 2007, Varner said the team is ready to get back to the top.

And facing a team like Bakersfield is one step in achieving that goal.

"It's crazy that we're taking them on early, but it will let us know where we stand," said Varner.

Cowboys will be led by senior Jordan Adamczyk. Coined by Varner as one of the best quarterbacks in the Foothill League, Adamczyk will finally make his debut.

He'll have a solid corps of offensive players to help him out.

Returning seniors Kevin Voogt and Chris Rivas will hold down the receivers spot, while Geffen Camp looks to give Canyon a boost at the tailback position.

Running back Antonio Bray returns to the Cowboys line-up this season. However, due to eligibility issues Bray will not be making an appearance in tonight's game. He may be a force for the Canyon team this season.

Canyon's only defensive returner from last season, Parker Sutton, is sidelined with a thumb injury and will not play, but will return to the line-up next week when Canyon faces Granada Hills.

"Our plan is to be the spoiler in this game and come out with some success." Varner said.
