AP Odd News
Through a rough spell

DUQUESNE, Pennsylvania (AP) — Allegheny County public works officials say a subcontractor will pay to replace two new road signs containing one of the most commonly misspelled names in the Pittsburgh region: Duquesne.

The signs were unveiled as part of the renovated Rankin Bridge, which leads to Duquesne among other places just east of the city. But the town’s name is misspelled D-U-Q-U-E-N-S-E instead of D-U-Q-U-E-S-N-E.

Duquesne was the name of a pre-Revolutionary War governor-general for whom Fort Duquesne was named.

The historical moniker also labels a bridge, a beer, an electric company, and a former sports arena in the area, to name just a few.

Still, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says the name is commonly misspelled. A reporter who typed in the misspelled name into the Google search engine still got 25,000 hits.

Robber nabs bronzed footprints
BOSTON (AP) — Perhaps the thief thought if he couldn’t walk in former Boston Mayor Kevin White’s footsteps, he’d just take them.

Police say they are investigating the apparent theft of six oversized bronze footprints that had been embedded in the sidewalk near a statue of the former mayor.

The footsteps led to a larger-than-life statue of White, who served as mayor from 1968 until 1984.

Officials think the theft took place last weekend and police are reviewing surveillance video from the area near City Hall and Faneuil Hall. Another of the footprints stolen several months ago has not been recovered.

The Pablo Eduardo-designed sculpture was dedicated in 2006.

White is credited with revitalizing the area around Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, now among the city’s most popular tourist spots.

Minn. man unsuspecting getaway driver in robbery
JANESVILLE, Minnesota (AP) — A 26-year-old man thought he was doing a good deed when he gave a 70-year-old woman a ride to a Minnesota bank.

But police say the woman robbed the bank, and the man was her unsuspecting getaway driver.

The man told The Free Press of Mankato that he thought the woman, who rents an apartment from his mother, was going to the bank to withdraw cash to pay her rent.

Instead, employees of the Elysian State Bank reported Wednesday that an “elderly woman” told the teller she had a gun, demanded money and left with an undisclosed amount.

Police stopped the car and took both into custody before determining the woman acted alone.

The Star Tribune reported the woman had a hammer but no gun. She’s in jail, pending charges.
