Library flap exposes city’s glaring hypocrisy

Well this is just too ironic to believe. The City Council wants to increase our taxes without a ballot measure. To quote Deputy City Manager Darren Hernandez, “We do not need to pass a ballot measure to collect the special library tax.” I just love how the city spends our money to save us money.

Would someone please provide us with the total cost of this library- takeover fiasco? Here’s what I’ve come up with and I’d like to know what else is involved even without the parcel tax levy to begin on July 11.

A total of $622,600 will be put toward the Jo Ann Darcy Canyon Country Library renovation, plus the option to buy the books and materials at the cost of $436,000. A total of $19.3 million will be spent on a contract with Library Systems and Services LLC ($3.8 million a year).

And according to The Signal’s Oct. 21 edition: “On top of its $19.3 million for five years, LSSI will receive $135,000 from Oct. 1 through June 30 to assist the city during its transition. The city intends to spend $2.3 million the first year to fill 58 LSSI positions. About $3 million will go toward paying off the $10 million in debt, plus interest, the city will spend buying the Valencia Library’s building and the three libraries’ books and other materials.” Did I miss anything? Oh, yes, the cost of completing the Newhall Library and stocking it.

When The Signal reported that LSSI will employ 58 people, it seems that journalistic integrity would also require the newspaper to report that 80 people will be out of work. The hypocrisy of the city’s “Shop Local” effort boggles the mind, with millions of our dollars being sent to a firm in Maryland. Speaking of which, the first time I accessed the LSSI website, there were two libraries in New Jersey listed. They are no longer on the list. I wonder why?
