LOS ANGELES COUNTY - The Board of Supervisors approved a motion by County Mayor Michael D. Antonovich and Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky directing the Department of Regional Planning to prepare an ordinance adopting standards to preserve the natural darkness of night skies for the residents of the county's rural areas.

"While some unincorporated areas have adopted similar standards for their Community Standards Districts, this action will provide a standard for outdoor lighting in all county unincorporated areas," Antonovich said. "These standards would improve the quality of life for our residents in unincorporated areas, protect native wildlife, and reduce energy consumption and air pollution."

The motion directs the proposed ordinance and environmental documents be presented to the Regional Planning Commission for consideration by Sept. 28, 2011.
