“The Lion in Winter” as previously presented in Pine Mountain in November. The play comes to Saugus Dec. 10.

The SETGroup will present a Fair Printz Raven Production of James Goldman's award-winning Broadway hit, "The Lion in Winter," at the SCV Space in Dec. 10, 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19 and two special New Year's champagne shows Dec. 30 and 31. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 or $10 for seniors and students, and $20 for the champagne shows. For tickets call (661) 263-3733 or purchase online at www.setheatre.com.

Numerous awards and accolades have been bestowed on this work of biting wit, cutting humor and tautly-drawn drama, which first premiered in 1966. It has been both a hit Broadway play many times over and an award winning film and TV movie. Playwright James Goldman has crafted a clever play of imperfect Royal family members, constantly warring with each other as they plot and plan to seize the coveted crown and be the next king of England. Their machinations and deviousness provide a look at a truly dysfunctional family of the 12th century that strangely, on closer inspection, doesn't look to out of place in today's world either.

This production has a multi-generational cast of local and regional actors featuring Bill Fair as Henry the II, Stacey Havener as Eleanor, Wednesday Hobson as Alais, Angelo Romanelli as Richard the Lionhearted, Jay Potter as Geoffrey, Nick Vaughn as John, and Nick Mullein as Prince Phillip. The production is directed by entertainment veteran Kat Fair. Mary Main, of the SCV Space, designed the medieval costumes and sparse Chinon Castle set.

While medieval in look, and borrowing its storyline from real events of the 12th Century, the play is in modern English and very easy for the audience to follow, although it should be noted that the play does present mature themes and is not for children. Seating is limited throughout the run, and already the New Year's Eve Show has almost sold out, with only a few seats remaining.

The SCV Space, an intimate space for theatre, performance, rehearsals and more, is located at 27600 Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus.
