Gunshots were fired in Canyon Country as an exchange between two sets of alleged gang members turned violent, sheriff's Sgt. Ron Price said Monday.

Juan Cabrera, 22, and a teenager were arrested near North Oaks Park late Sunday and charged with vandalism, Price said.

At approximately 11:40 p.m. Sunday, Cabrera and an unidentified male juvenile, both alleged gang members, were reportedly hurling Corona beer bottles at a car parked in the 27000 block of Deep Tree Avenue in Canyon Country, Price said.

Another group of men fired shots at Cabrera and the teenager, the sergeant added. The shots hit the same car that was struck by the bottles, he said.

Deputies recovered the shells but have not matched the casings to a particular type of gun yet, sheriff's officials said.

Cabrera allegedly fled the scene in a P.T. Cruiser and was spotted later near North Oaks Park where deputies were investigating gang-related graffiti, Price said. Cabrera and his teenage accomplice were apprehended and the Cruiser was searched. Corona bottles identical to those used in the earlier incident were found in the car, Price said.

The juvenile was released to his parents. Cabrera is being held at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station in lieu of $20,000 bail. He is due in Santa Clarita Superior Court Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.

The shooting investigation is ongoing, Price said.
