Hart forward Christina Falcone (21) defends Stockdale’s Alyssa Shannon (10) on Saturday at Valencia High School. The Indians fell in the third-place game of the Valencia High-Five Classic.

At first, Hart was taking advantage of Stockdale’s aggressive style of defense.

The Indians were finding open lanes and shots in transition when they were able to break the press.

But Hart couldn’t break the press consistently enough, and ended up on the losing end of a 65-47 game in the third-place matchup at the Valencia High-Five Classic Tournament.

Hart (2-2) handled Stockdale’s full-court pressure defense for the first half, trailing just 23-20 at the break.

But the Indians ran out of gas in the second half.

“I don’t think it was a physical fatigue thing,” said Hart head coach Zach Koebel of the pressure. “It started to disrupt us mentally and we got out of our game.”

The Mustangs (3-1) built on their lead with fast break points, which were often set up by plays made by point guard Alyssa Shannon.

She stepped into passing lanes and knocked balls out the hands of Hart players all night long, in addition to leading the team with 26 points offensively.

“I think the press really got to them,” said Stockdale head coach Charles Stewart. “Later in the game, when you only have eight players, you’re going to get tired.”

Hart’s usual nine-player roster was one short Saturday with guard Victoria Lionetti sitting out due to illness.

Fellow guard Madyson Stately filled in nicely, knocking down three of her four shots from downtown in the first half, but the Mustangs made a defensive adjustment and held her scoreless in the second half.

Stately finished with nine points.

In the third quarter, Hart’s shooting went cold and Stockdale heated up.

Mustangs’ shooters made 11-of-17 field goals in a 24-point quarter, extending their lead to 47-32.

The Indians couldn’t recover from the scoring barrage.

“We lost focus on what our game plan was,” Koebel said. “In the first half, we actually executed pretty well.”

The Indians were led by guard Melissa Boscarino’s 12 points and forward Christina Falcone pitched in 11.

Despite the loss, Koebel said the game proved to be a good test for Hart.

“I like playing them,” he said of Stockdale. “I’d play them every week if I could.”
