Goodbye and thanks to the local Do it Center

When I moved here in 1981, there were two “big” hardware stores: Builders Emporium and the Do it Center (known then as Neiman Reed Lumber City). Then came the “bigger box” hardware stores. The Emporium closed about 10 years ago.

The Doit Center was our neighborhood hardware store where we got to know the friendly employees who knew where everything was. “Ed” and “Moose” were on a first-name basis, both having passed away recently. The Halloween and Christmas merchandise displays were the best in the city. Easy in and easy out. The store was here through earthquakes, fires, floods and building booms. Their newspaper ads and their bright yellow and red plastic bags were a part of the household.

I know the chain still exists; that only the local store is closing, a sign of the times. The Do it Center said goodbye to us recently. Speaking for many regular customers and friends, I just wanted to say “thanks for being here” when we had to just “run down to Do It” for that hardware need.

Good luck to all the staff. I hope they are able to find positions in the other stores. Another business that served our community well will be missed.
