Melinda Piligian, owner of Cake Goodness, creates a replica of the 73-story U.S. Bank Tower in Downtown Los Angeles for “Fabulous Cakes.” The skyscraper is the tallest building in L.A.

Chef Melinda Piligian, of Valencia, and owner of Cake Goodness will be featured in the second episode of TLC’s “Fabulous Cakes” to air 10 p.m. Monday.

“Fabulous Cakes” is now in its second season and features some of the best pastry chefs in the world as they share their tips and techniques. The chefs conceive, construct and deliver cakes that take the art of pastry above and beyond your everyday dessert.

Piligian gained fame in the Santa Clarita Valley as the winner of the second annual Sweet Charity Cake Auction to benefit the SCV Youth Project. The event was held in March, and saw Piligian’s topsy-turvey purple, white and black creation capture the first-place trophy from a field of more than 30 cakes.

Piligian said her experience on “Fabulous Cakes” was a challenge.

“The cake I created for the show was not the type of thing I usually do. I don’t usually make buildings or skyscrapers,” she said. “I’m more of a fun, cutesy, wedding cake designer. But it turned out to be really fun.”

Piligian said she was contacted by a representative from “Fabulous Cakes” to appear on the show. “It turned out to be really fun. I’ve never done anything like before,” she said. “The whole process (of making television) was new to me. I’m not used to stopping (when creating a cake) to explain what I’m doing. It was also nerve-wracking. I was making a cake for national television so I knew it had to turn out well. And I think it did.”

Cake Goodness was founded by Piligian seven years ago.

“I was just a poor college student who needed money, but I have a creative bent that I was born with,” she said. “I went to business school because I didn’t have any idea how to run the business side of it.”

She soon found word-of-mouth referrals that helped launch her business.

Piligian is married to Chris, a Burbank firefighter. The couple have been married for 1 1/2 years.

In Monday’s episode of “Fabulous Cakes,” three bakeries in California create over-the-top cakes for special occasions. Piligian makes a towering skyscraper cake complete with a spiraling staircase for a charity fund-raiser.
