New Newhall library would be a boon to students

A new Newhall Library in Old Town Newhall sounds a bit oxymoronic, but it sure is the best idea I've heard in years.

Newhall Library Advisory Committee Chairwoman Linda Demmers' magnificently futuristic planning impressed me. The virtual tour of California libraries clearly puts to rest the ridiculous notion that libraries are passé.

Just as Jim Ventress, chief professional officer of the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita, and Marc Winger, superintendent of the Newhall Elementary School District, publicly proposed partnerships with new library, I too, as a trustee of the William S. Hart Union High School District, envision Hart's inclusion in those joint efforts.

The suggested services provided in this new library are amazing. Not only will there be homework and continued education programs sections, but also there will be an emphasis on the use of all kinds of audio/video, electronic-based technological, interactive fun stuff.

How about special areas for preschool story reading, after-school club meetings, an arts and entertainment center, and even an in-house café?

I've heard it said that this proposed new library is "not your grandma's library." Well, of course it is! It is, in fact, the whole family's library.

The city of Santa Clarita acquired a great location for the new Newhall Library on the corner of Main Street and Lyons Avenue. It will mark a great entryway into Old Town Newhall.

For the good of our entire community, let's get moving on this project.
