Coming off a season where it advanced to the state tournament for the first time in team history, the College of the Canyons women's volleyball team won its season debut.

Canyons beat up on Southwestern College from Chula Vista on Wednesday, 25-12, 25-15, 25-15.

The Cougars were able to play nearly everyone from their team on the court. The average height of this year's team is 5-foot-9.

"We're very happy with what we saw," COC head coach Lisa Hooper said. "I think we're productive."

Outside hitter Lauren Wells, a Valencia High graduate, hit eight kills.

Setter Danielle Evans passed eight assists. Freshman Ashlie Arnold, who led Canyon High in assists last season, added seven.

The Cougars' next match is at 5 p.m. on Sept. 5 at Irvine Valley College.

Their next home match is on Sept. 10 against Cerritos College.
