The Santa Clarita Valley Emergency Winter Shelter will host an open house on Tuesday, Nov. 30, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Following hundreds of hours of donated labor and materials, the Santa Clarita Valley Emergency Winter Shelter is just about ready to open its doors at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

On Tuesday, Nov. 30, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., shelter board members and staff would like to say a big "thank you" to the generous Santa Clarita community at the third annual Open House.

The Open House is the perfect time for anyone to stop by the shelter for personal tours, to meet the board and staff, find out about volunteer opportunities, view the shelter's short film and socialize over free refreshments.

More than 200 volunteers and dozens of donors made the shelter's expansion a success.

"It has been a long three months, but seeing the shelter come to life under the sweat and hands of volunteers has been a blessing," said Tim Davis, the shelter's executive director. "We're ready to open the doors to our neighbors in need. But first, we hope Santa Clarita residents will find at least an hour of their time on the 30th to come celebrate the shelter's extreme makeover."

Guests can stop by anytime between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Guests can also bring material donations. The shelter's top three needs are: 33-gallon garbage bags with draw strings; plastic utensils; and plastic/foam plates and cups.

On Dec. 1 at 6 p.m., homeless clients can either walk in to the shelter or wait at one of the three pick-up locations for van transportation. The pick-up locations are at JoAnne Darcy Library bus stop, Metrolink Newhall bus stop and the Via Princessa Metrolink bus stop.

This year the shelter will host an on-site nurse, drug and alcohol meetings, health and dental clinics. Shelter staff will provide case management to clients who want to get back on their feet.

The shelter is open from Dec. 1 to March 16.

There is still some work to be done and needed materials before opening day and before the expansion to include 14 more beds can be completed. Anyone can see what building material donations are still needed at under "Beds for All."
