Ventura County Sheriff's deputies were still searching Tuesday afternoon for a 39-year-old Los Angeles man who drowned in Lake Piru after trying to save his 5-year-old daughter Monday evening, Capt. Ross Bonfiglio said.

Anatoly Smolyaski was boating with his three children at approximately 5:45 p.m. when his youngest daughter fell into the water, Bonfiglio said. The girl was wearing a life jacket.

Smolyaski jumped in after the girl and assisted her back in the boat. As he lifted the girl into the boat, Smolyaski slipped under the water and never resurfaced, Bonfiglio said.

Ventura County Sheriff's Department dive teams resumed the searching for Smolyaski's body in Lake Piru Tuesday morning.

As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, a body had not been found, he said.

Visibility has hampered the investigation. "The water clarity is only six inches," he said.

Ventura County deputies are using underwater sonar and volunteers have joined the recovery effort.

Bonfiglio said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has offered its boat divers to help in the effort.
