VAN NUYS - The trial of Kevin Thomas, the former Canyon Country High School volunteer coach charged with several counts of sexual assault on minors, was continued Tuesday to Sept. 17.

Thomas, 40, sat slumped in his seat at a preliminary hearing in Van Nuys Municipal Court as his attorney Robert Nadler and Deputy District Attorney Alisanne Scolnik agreed to continue the case to Sept. 17 when a preliminary hearing setting will be held.

Nadler said the defense needs more time to go through the evidence in the case, which includes video and audio tapes.

"On the whole the amount of evidence isn't voluminous, but there is a lot," Nadler said.

Thomas is charged with five counts of sexual penetration of a person under the age of 18, five counts of penetrating an unconscious person with a foreign object, one count of lewd conduct with a minor and one count of possession of child pornography.

Thomas was a teacher at a San Fernando Valley high school, and was a volunteer assistant coach at Canyon High.

No girls from Santa Clarita schools have accused Thomas of impropriety.

The charges stem from an alleged sexual assault on a Los Angeles Unified School District student. Thomas was arrested June 10 on that charge.

An investigation revealed as many as seven alleged victims and video tapes of lewd acts between Thomas and two of the alleged victims.

Scolnik said lining up witnesses for the case might be difficult considering the ages of the alleged victims.
"One of the victims is away at college and can't miss class," she said.

Scolnik also wants more time to prepare, she said.

"I would like to review the case with the witnesses before a preliminary hearing," she said.

Both sides hope a deal can be made before the preliminary hearing setting to avoid a trial.
Thomas is being held in lieu of $600,000 bail at Men's Central Jail.
