The deadline to apply for a position on the city’s Citizens Public Library Advisory Committee is today.

The committee will help the city during its transition from the Los Angeles County Public Library system to a city library system. Committee members will conduct a community needs assessment and help develop a strategic plan for public library services in the city.

The Santa Clarita City Council voted in August to withdraw from the county system and create its own system, which will be run by private library-management firm Library Systems & Services LLC  or LSSI.

The transition period began in September and includes a negotiation to buy the Valencia and Newhall libraries as well as the books and other materials inside all three local libraries: Valencia, Newhall and Jo Anne Darcy Canyon Country Library.

Committee meetings will be once a month, on a weekday night. The committee will likely last nine months, according to the city.

Apply online at santa-clarita.com or by visiting the City Clerk’s office at 23920 Valencia Blvd., Suite 304.

The deadline is 5 p.m. today.
