Public invited to attend Elsmere Canyon dedication

The city of Santa Clarita is inviting the public to attend Friday's dedication of the Elsmere Canyon Open Space, the culmination of a decades-long battle to save the eastside canyon from becoming a giant garbage dump.

The city, in conjunction with the county and the Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority, recently closed escrow on the canyon. On Friday officials will dedicate it as a big chunk of the greenbelt of open space that's planned to circle Santa Clarita.

Members of the public are invited to attend the dedication, but they must RSVP in advance. They must arrive at a pick-up site by 11 a.m. so they can take a four-wheel-drive shuttle to the site.

The pick-up site is a half-mile south of Newhall Avenue on Sierra Highway. Turn left where you see balloons and park there.

To RSVP, call (661) 255-4321.
