On Friday, Nov. 12, at 11:30 a.m., the city of Santa Clarita will host a dedication to acknowledge its recently completed acquisition of 842 acres in Elsmere Canyon, located north of the Interstate 5/State Route 14 junction.

In the 1990s, Elsmere Canyon was proposed as the site of a 190 million ton landfill. The city, with the help of federal legislators, the Walt Disney Company and committed local residents, was able to effectively stop the landfill proposal. These last 842 acres are the remaining privately held acreage that was originally proposed for the landfill.

"Elsmere Canyon is an area of significant importance as it provides connectivity to existing wildlife corridors and increases the city's greenbelt of protected open space," said Mayor Laurene Weste.

The community is asked to RSVP to (661) 255-4939 to attend the dedication. As all guests will need to be shuttled to the event site, confirmed attendees are asked to arrive at 11:00 a.m.

The entrance to the site is off Sierra Highway and is 1/4 mile west of Newhall Avenue.
