The following essays are from fourth-grade students at Newhall Elementary School.

First place
What’s the most interesting thing I have learned in science? In fourth grade, I’ve learned how to eat like a bird. In third grade, I learned how to measure in gallons, and liquid.

An amethyst is a type of the mineral quartz; I also learned about all kinds of minerals.

One of them is amethyst, clear quartz. Scientists have found 3,000 minerals in the planet Earth.

These are the order from the minerals: taka, gypsum, calcite, fluorite, apatite, orthoclase, quartz, topaz, ruby and diamond.

Halite has a cubic cleaver age; olivine is a curved fracture. Mica is a good cleavage, It breaks easily into flat sheets.

I’ve learned about rocks and minerals: In what to ways can igneous rocks be different from one another?

Rocks are black rock, and are like smoky quartz. Once I saw smoky quartz, but I think that it was rock.

The amethyst is little, and its color is blue. The rock that I like is the amethyst. I like it because it’s cool.

One  day, I found one of those. My dad has one almost like that.

I learned in science lab to make experiments. We make nests like how the birds get things.
Juan Nava

People can learn about ecosystems.

The grassland community has many populations of animals. Some populations of bees live in trees.

Many populations make a community in this cold taiga ecosystem. When a lion goes to find what to eat, the second time a zebra could be next. Some protista are a kind of microorganism.

A microscope can make tiny things look big. The mold is growing on its bread. Ants help aphids by taking them to their nests at night. This keeps the aphids safe. Aphids give food to the ants. A lot of dogs carry seeds that get stuck in their fur.
Only fruit bats carry pollen between flowers.

Sunlight, water and soil are nonliving parts of an ecosystem. Each part helps plants and animals survive.

A lot of moose survive in a forest ecosystem. Most prairie dogs live in a grassland.

Some crabs use seaweed and small shells as camouflage. A desert ecosystem has a lot of plants and animals, and adaptation helps them survive in the hot, dry, dirty climate.

Some birds’ nests are in cacti. In some countries, bears get food from trash cans — a problem.

Hi, my name is Elsa. I am in fourth grade. My teacher’s name is Miss Golbert.

The thing I like in science is that in third grade I learned about planets like Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

It is cool to learn about planets because you can’t remember your planet if you cannot learn your planet.

In science, it was the best day because when I was learning about how the planets had different colors.

I like  the planets’ colors — blue, green, gray, red and any different color. It is the best when you learn about planets.
Elsa Amario

The most important thing I learned in science is that it is not easy eating like a bird. Science could be fun to do.
Science is fun because you could do lots of cool things.

My brother and I study science. It is hard building a bird nest. Science is fun because you get to discover things.

When my brother and I come home from school, we pretend that we are scientists, by finding dinosaur bones. I like science, because I find out about animals and lots of things I don’t know. In science, I learned that all animals cannot do things like we do.
Jimena Jaramillo

What’s the most interesting thing you have learned in science? I went to the science lab. I like to learn more about things. I learned to make a bird’s nest. I built a robot.
Fabian M.

I learned about rocks and minerals: While I was on vacation, I saw a bunch of different rocks in different sizes.
What are the two types of textures that help you classify rocks?

There are a lot of different rocks like granite, diorite and gabbro. Did you know that granite, diorite and gabbro have large mineral crystals in them?

Sandstone, limestone, chert and coal are types of sedimentary rocks.

These are kind of metamorphic rocks: schist, gneiss, slate and marble.

Amethyst is a type of the mineral quartz. California’s state gem is bentonite.

Amethyst, cirine, clear quartz, rose quartz and smoky quartz are five kinds of colors for quartz.

Did you know that there are different kinds of mineral streaks? Mineral lusters are like talc, topaz, gypsum, pyrite, artinite, kaolinite, and wulfenite.
