Kudos for cross country

Cross country running has been an amazing part of my family’s life over the years.

In fact, my mother and father moved to Santa Clarita in 1986, when I was 12 years old, because the cross country coach at Hart High School convinced them that the schools, sports philosophy and community would allow my brother, sister and I to strive to be star student athletes and earn our way to college through scholarship.

The coach was correct.

In 1989, my father was asked to coach the boys varsity team at Hart. I had the good fortune of making the varsity cross-country team as a freshman, and from 1989 to 1993, we won three CIF championships, three state championships and one No. 1 ranking in the nation in 1992.

I have fond years of the College of the Canyons killer cross country course that used to be the home course of several schools, and boy, did the other schools out of the area hate to come race us there.

My brother and I were NCAA All-American athletes in college, and I am proud of my brother making it as far as being an alternate in the Sydney, Australia Olympics for the USA marathon team.

I am writing to commend the city of Santa Clarita for helping and continuing to shape this sport that gave my family and many others so much over the years.

It all started here in Santa Clarita.

I look forward to the new cross country course just dedicated at Central Park.
