County library officials to meet with city officials today

Editor’s note: County library officials asked that The Signal publish the following letter addressed to Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Pulskamp.

Dear Mr. Pulskamp:

The county library is looking forward to meeting your staff (today) to discuss the completion of the Canyon Country Library-expansion project.

Unfortunately, these discussions are taking place after the city of Santa Clarita moved to withdraw from county library service — an action that prompted the county to put the project on hold.

Preliminary discussions may have averted this.

As you know, the Canyon Country Library facility is owned by the city, but the expansion project is being managed by the county, which currently leases and administers library services for the city.

Since the project is funded with fees paid by developers of residential housing in the unincorporated portion of the Canyon Country Library service area, the county has a fiduciary responsibility to the unincorporated area residents to ensure the funds are allocated according to state law.

I look forward to a successful outcome to tomorrow’s meeting.
