West Ranch baseball players and teammates Mitchell Thompson and Casey Watkins were selected to the 2008 Dodger Elite Team.

"I was really excited when I got the invitation," Thompson said. "All the hard work had paid off."

The team, which is made up of players from Southern and Northern California, Arizona, and Nevada, is one of four teams coached and managed by the Los Angeles Dodger scouting staff.

All four teams will compete against each other this weekend at Dodger Stadium.

Participation in the teams, which consists mostly of high school juniors and seniors, gives the players an opportunity to catch the eyes of college and professional scouts.

Famed Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda will make an appearance this weekend and spend time with players and their families.

Thompson, a third baseman and outfielder, and Watkins an infielder for the Wildcats, both earned All-Star honors this summer while competing in the Valley Invitational Baseball League.

Last season Watkins batted a .288, scored 17 times and drove in 17 runs for West Ranch while Thompson batted .327, belted one home run and scored 13 runs with 13 RBIs.
