Business entrepreneurs throughout Southern California have the opportunity to be honored during 2011’s Small Business Week. The Small Business Administration will recognize outstanding small-business owners and advocates for their contributions to the economy during the week of May 15-22.

President Obama declared the week national Small Business Week. The SBA is currently accepting nominations in several award categories, including 2011 Small-Business Person of the Year award. The deadline for nominations is Nov. 12.

“It’s a nice opportunity to be recognized and gets good publicity for the firms,” said Steve Tannehill, director of the Small Business Development Center at College of the Canyons.

According to the SBDC, Huntsinger Family Farms won an award last year in the Family-Owned Business category. Two years ago, the SBDC won an award recognizing the center for Service Excellence and Innovation.

A spring news release issued by the White House said small-business owners embody the spirit of entrepreneurship and are the backbone of the nation’s economy, employing millions of workers. In the past 15 years, small businesses have created the majority of new private-sector jobs.

Tannehill said the SBDC’s advisers are searching through their database of small businesses, searching for potential nominees in more than a dozen categories in which a small business can be recognized.

Some of the award categories for small businesses are exporter of the year, young entrepreneur, family-owned business, home-based business, minority small business, veteran business and women in business champion of the year. The SBA publishes a detailed packet of award-nomination information.

Trade associations, chambers of commerce and business organizations frequently sponsor candidates. A business owner may nominate themselves or other candidates.

Small-business owners who win an award gather for lunch at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles to receive their awards and plaques.

“If anyone would like to talk to us about the awards, we would be more than happy to talk to them,” Tannehill said.

Nomination criteria and deadline dates for all award categories can be found by on the SBA website at www.sba.gov/ca/la.
