Deputies arrested a suspected drug dealer in Castaic on Tuesday after they discovered he had about 20 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of a car, authorities said.

While patrolling the 31000 block of Castaic Road at 2 a.m., deputies attention was drawn to two men at the Days Inn Hotel, said Sgt. Darren Harris of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.

After Rickey Evanoff, 30, and another man were detained, deputies discovered 20 pounds of pot in the trunk of a Pontiac car. The marijuana has an estimated street value of about $80,000, Harris said.

Evanoff, of Carson City, Nevada, was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale, transportation of marijuana, both felonies and possession of more than an ounce of marijuana, a misdemeanor.

The other man deputies had detained was released.

"Through the investigation deputies found (Evanoff) was the primary person responsible for the marijuana," Harris said.

Evanoff was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station and is being held on $30,000 bail.

Authorities from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station have made about 1,200 drug related arrests so far this year, according to a statement.
