CHP Newhall Station Capt. Mark Odle marked the ceremonial groundbreaking Monday of a new elevated carpool lane in the Newhall Pass.

Standing at a podium to address reporters with the Interstate 5-Highway 14 split as a backdrop, CHP Newhall Station Capt. Mark Odle marked the ceremonial groundbreaking Monday of a new elevated carpool lane in the Newhall Pass.

The lane will allow motorists to stay in the carpool lane while switching freeways in the Newhall Pass.

"This project is another step toward that seamless transportation system we have all been working toward," said Douglas R. Failing, Caltrans District 7 director.

The elevated high-occupancy-vehicle lane is expected help to relieve congestion, improve traffic flow, enhance safety and improve traffic operations of both freeways at the Interstate 5/Highway 14 interchange. Failing said.

About 357,000 commuters use the Newhall Pass every day, according to Caltrans.

The new carpool lane is expected to be completed in fall 2012.
