Miss SCV Pageant Makes a Sweet Delivery!
The girls of the Miss SCV Pageant were busy this week making "sweet" deliveries to folks around town. I was one of the lucky ones to receive a bright red box filled with homemade cookies and brownies! The pageant girls, who must complete required hours of community service to participate, are fixtures at so many events - including Chamber of Commerce grand openings, fundraisers and the SCV Press Club's Newsmaker Awards. I huge thank you to the Miss SCV Pageant for my wonderful Valentine! Contestants are still being sought for the next pageant which will be held April 20 at the Hyatt Valencia. For information call 252-3232 or visit missscvpageants.com. Deadline for entry is March 1. It's a wonderful program for young women to learn leadership and presentation skills and the value of community service.

Soroptimists Cruise Around the World
Gavin MacLeod from "Love Boat" will be the celebrity host of this year's Soroptimist International of Santa Clarita Valley's 33rd annual fundraising auction March 8 at the Hyatt in Valencia. St. Claire's Lenten Fish Fry
If you've not attended St. Claire's Lenten Fish Fry, you're missing some of the best fish and chips in the Santa Clarita Valley. Every Friday, through March 14 (4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.) volunteers from St. Claire's Catholic Church (19606 Calla Way) in Canyon Country are serving beer-battered Alaskan Cod, French fries or rice pilaf, coleslaw (some of the best I've ever had) - to benefit families in need through various local charities. It's a wonderful evening of community and open to the public. You can get your fish to go, too! The two-piece fish meal is $7.50 and the three-piece meal is $8.50.

SCV Man and Woman of the Year Sought
Santa Clarita is a community filled with volunteers. Once a year the best of the bunch are honored by an appreciative mix of business professionals, family, non-profit leaders and their peers - the folks who make up the Man and Woman of the Year Committee. The Man and Woman of the Year committee honors two outstanding Santa Clarita citizens each year. Nominated by SCV's not-for-profit organizations, SCV's most dedicated volunteers are publicly thanked for their community-minded contributions. A vote taken by previous Man and Woman of the Year winners determines the most current recipients of this prestigious title. All Santa Clarita-based non-profit organizations are encouraged to submit applications in appreciation of their finest un-paid supporters. SCV Woman of the Year 2007 Jeanna Crawford and SCV Man of the Year 2007
, will chair this year's recognition dinner to be held May 2. Volunteer service can be given as an individual or as a member of a group or organization. Nominees are judged on their volunteer effort, years of service, number of organizations served and other contributions. The 42nd Annual Santa Clarita Valley Man and Woman of the Year nominations are due by Friday, Feb. 29. All submissions must be made online at www.scvmanandwomanoftheyear.org.

City Elections April 8
Yes, this is the big "presidential" election year - but "all politics is local" (it is said) and elections for folks who can really impact YOUR life will be held April 8. Two Santa Clarita City Council positions will be up for grabs. One is currently filled by Bob Kellar who will be seeking re-election. The other position was vacated by Cameron Smyth when he was elected a California State Representative. Candidates on the ballot include Bob Kellar, Bob Spierer, Diane Trautman, Laurie Ender and Maria Gutzeit. If you missed Friday's candidate's forum at city hall sponsored by The Signal and KHTS then mark your calendar for a City Council Candidate Debate hosted by the Santa Clarita Community Coalition to be held 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Santa Clarita Activities Center Banquet Room located at 20880 Center Pointe Parkway. All five candidates will be participating. Everyone is invited to attend.
