Terri Wahrman (left) stopped by The Signal's offices to pick up her new iPad from Signal Circulation Manager Carolyn Orrante Wednesday afternoon. Wahrman won a random drawing from entries submitted by new subscribers or returning subscribers who had not had home delivery for the previous 90 days.

Terri Wahrman, a housewife and mother of two who resides in the Mira Monte area of Saugus in the Santa Clarita Valley, has won a free Apple iPad in a random drawing that climaxed a contest designed to boost The Signal's print circulation.

"'Surprised' would be the understatement of the year -- I was shocked and thrilled at the same time," Wahrman said when notified. "I've never won anything in my life, and to win something this substantial was very exciting."

A 23-year Santa Clarita Valley resident, Wahrman filled out a "Win an iPad" contest entry blank when she renewed her subscription at one of the final summer 2010 Concerts in the Park at Central Park, where The Signal had a booth at each Saturday night concert.

The contest offered a chance to enter the raffle for the iPad drawing with the purchase of a year's subscription to the paper.

Once the contest was closed, the drawing was delayed until all new subscribers' checks cleared and credit card transactions were completed.

Wahrman said she was a longtime Signal subscriber who had moved a couple times in the last couple of years, and her subscription had lapsed. She had gone more than 90 days without home delivery and therefore eligible to enter and win the contest.

"We were in the process of purchasing this home (in Mira Monte) and moved in," she said. "My subscription was up for renewal, so when I saw the booth at the park, I signed up to renew there."

Wahrman has one son attending Valencia High School and another son who's a Saugus High alumnus and just graduated from Rutgers University.

But she plans to give the iPad to her husband, Kevin, who works at Sony Studios. They had talked just a week or so ago about getting one.

"We had a discussion at dinner with some friends about it and he was interested in purchasing an iPad," she said. "He's a man who does not ask for anything, and I had just started to research it to purchase one for him."

Then she got the call from The Signal with the news her name had been drawn in the contest she had entered.

"The timing -- it's just amazing how this whole thing went full-circle," she said.

Even between subscriptions, Wahrman said she reads The Signal every day. "I'm an avid Signal reader because I like to know what's happening in the community. My favorite parts of the paper are the front page, the news about what's filming in town, and the classifieds."

During the day, she said, "I also go online to The-Signal.com to see whatever updates might be coming."
