Hart High School's award winning dance team, led by adviser Linda Martin and coach Jenn Basse, pose for a team photo before heading off to the Elite USA Summer Dance Camp held at Cal Lutheran University.

The award-winning Hart High School Dance Team, headed by adviser Linda Martin and coached by Jenn Basse, has spent a very busy summer preparing for their 2008-09 school year.

The team started with eight mornings of intensive technique training and conditioning, followed by a variety of team-bonding activities each afternoon. One highlight, a swim party, included as special guests Hart’s friendly rivals from across town, the Saugus High School Dance Team. Team members said was wonderful to see that both teams’ members continue to maintain strong friendships in spite of being competitors.

Next, the Hart Dance Team headed off to the Elite USA Summer Dance Camp held at Cal Lutheran University where the team was thrilled to receive superior awards in both the “Choreography-to-Go” and “Show Time USA Dance” categories. Nellie Bailon, one of Hart’s team captains, was also honored by being selected as one of the top twelve dancers at the camp. Particularly “Hart-warming” for the team was to be chosen by all the other participating dance teams, for the second year in a row, to receive the “Friendliest Team” award.

Upcoming events include the chance to dance with the team at their annual Dance Clinic fund raiser for grades K through 12 to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Hart High School Gym. The donation fee of $30 includes a T-shirt, snack, pizza, and drink, plus a ton of fun while learning a routine to be performed for parents at the end of the clinic. A registration form is currently available on the team Web site at Click on “Dance” under the “Performing Arts” link, then click “Handouts and Forms.”

Also, dance lovers should mark their calendars for another major event to take place at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 in the Hart High School Auditorium. Called, “Hart of the Holidays,” this will be the Dance Team’s first performing arts showcase, and will benefit both the Santa Clarita Hunger Defense Fund and the team.
