The waiting game

As a longtime resident of Santa Clarita (I was here when it was Newhall, Valencia and Saugus), I have learned to be patient when driving here.

Over the years the traffic has increased, and more and more large intersections have sprung up throughout our fair city.

As I approached these intersections I used to think: “Oh, I hope I make the light, I hope I make the light, I hope I make the light.” Of course I’ve learned that I will never ever make the light. I just miss it and have to wait.

Now, I wait for the cars on the left and the right, the cars coming toward me, and of course, all the cars making turns. Some might become upset with all the waiting, but I’ve learned to master the moment.

I keep a copy of “War and Peace” or some other short novel handy to skim while waiting my turn. It takes my mind off the delay, and I get caught up on my reading.

So, my fellow Santa Clarita drivers, do not despair — the waiting game can be productive.

However, there is one driver on our roads with whom I’m losing my patience. He’s the driver in front of me in the left turn lane who doesn’t pull into the intersection so that when the light changes both he and I can make our turns. We both could “make the light.”

I always think, “Pull up into the intersection, pull up into the intersection, pull up into the intersection.” He never pulls up. You know what’s next. The cars on the left, the cars on the ... Oh, well — I have time to read another novel!
