In a matter of months, the JCPenney store in Valencia will be energy efficient thanks to a soon-to-be installed solar power system that will generate clean electric power and reduce emissions.

The Valencia department store is one of 10 JCPenney stores in California and New Jersey that will have solar and wind power systems installed, according to a news release from the Texas-based company.

The solar system will be installed on the store's rooftop and is expected to be complete in November.

The company estimates the solar system will produce more than four megawatts of clean electric power and help avoid emissions of approximately 146,000 tons of carbon dioxide over the expected 30-year lifetime.

That number is equal to the annual greenhouse gas emissions generated by more than 800 cars.

Along with rooftop solar systems, the 10 pilot stores -- including the JCPenney at Westfield Valencia Town Center -- will receive energy efficient lighting and energy management systems that will reduce power consumption.
