UPDATED: Water main break causes traffic back-up

The intersection of Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway was shut down shortly before 6 p.m. after a water main burst, sending water gushing into the air.

A small sinkhole opened up as a result, said sheriff's Lt. Tom Bryski.

Traffic was backed up on surrounding streets, with Valencia closed on the west and east sides of McBean Parkway, as far back as Citrus Street. The surrounding intersection has been shut down while maintenance crews work.

McBean Parkway is closed on the north side at Mall Entrance, with traffic being diverted through the McBean Transfer Station or Westfield Valencia Town Center. On the south side, it is shut down at Del Monte Drive.

Traffic is reportedly backed up considerably on surrounding streets.

As of 7:20 p.m. sheriff's officials did not know how much longer the street closures will be in effect.

Bryski said the water main break was not as a result of a traffic collision, but added that "we're just trying to figure out what's going on."
