Today's actions are part of tomorrow's regrets

With the refusal of the U.S. Senate to lift the "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays serving in the military, the Republicans once again show their true colors.

They love to wave around the Constitution and claim that they have some special grasp of it, but their actions betray their words.

By voting against this cruel policy, they demean the thousands of homosexual members of our military and condemn them to living as second-class citizens a while longer.

Until and unless America lives up to its creed to provide all of the rights and responsibilities of citizens to all of its people, our nation will remain far short of its lofty words - a sham, really.

In the rearview mirror of history, today's actions - and those against full and equal rights for all people - will be viewed in future eras as a blot on this generation of Americans.
