Thanks for covering the value of roofing

Thank you to The Signal for publishing the Sept. 4 article “A new roof adds value to home,” in the Home section.

As the vice president of operations at GreatWay Roofing in Santa Clarita, I know that ours is an industry which unfortunately most homeowners think about only when trouble arises.

It was refreshing to see attention to roofs from an investment angle, because as the article states, most Americans believe owning a house is a great long-term investment.

I offer two items to supplement the article, for your readers’ consideration:
* While homeowners might consider a new roof a significant improvement project, consider how modern technology can recoup some of that investment through annual savings in the form of a “cool roof,” insulation or even the addition of skylights that can increase natural interior lighting and reduce electricity usage.

* Even if you cannot afford a full roof replacement now, it is wise to have it routinely inspected and maintained.

It can extend the life of your roof, and help establish a relationship with a quality roofing contractor, which can help if you have an emergency during busy windy or rainy seasons.

Please do not underestimate the importance of preventative maintenance with your roof.

Thanks again for the great article.
