The Santa Clarita Festival of the Arts, sponsored by Lockheed Federal Credit Union, will highlight a spectrum of artistic talent in Old Town Newhall on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2 and 3.

This exciting festival will be located along Main Street between 9th Street and 5th Street from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The festival will highlight a spectrum of artistic talent in a variety of mediums, focusing on the process of art.

The 2010 Festival of the Arts is free and open to the public and will feature a variety of artists creating artwork in multiple mediums, including woodcarving, ‘plein' air painting, sculptures and pottery, fine art street painting and much more.

Live entertainment and fine arts and crafts vendors will provide for an exciting afternoon.

The festival truly comes to life when street painters use more than 5,400 pieces of pastels to paint masterpieces in the middle of Main Street.

The street paintings will be available for viewing for 72 hours before they are washed away at the close of the event.

"The inspired creations that the talented artists present at the Festival of the Arts is an excellent opportunity for residents and visitors to experience the Arts & Entertainment destination that Old Town Newhall is burgeoning in to," Mayor Laurene Weste said.

Among other attractions, the Festival of the Arts will showcase temporary artworks such as sculpture, pottery, mosaics, woodworking, and installations.

A Festival Gallery on Canvas Gallery will display original paintings and photography from Santa Clarita students and professional artists.

Guests can relax and watch short films, compliments of Generation Arts, and enjoy the perfomances of live theatre, poetry and literary readings, spectacular aerial acrobatics, drumlines and dance troupes that will round out the afternoon.

In addition to viewing the creation and display of countless pieces of art, visitors will also have the chance to interact with artists at the festival and learn the history of the displayed art pieces directly from their creators.

Free parking will be available at the city's Newhall Community Center, located at 22421 Market St., Newhall 91321.
