Ed Masterson stepped down as president and CEO of the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce, and longtime Chamber member Charlie Gill will take over until a replacement can be found, it was announced Wednesday.

The Chamber board will launch a formal search for a new president and CEO next week.

Masterson was appointed to the position in May to fill what was planned to be a one-year term.

In an interview Wednesday, Masterson said he concluded the organization would be better served if a person who was a better fit assumed the interim role.

“The Chamber board has a strong and purposeful vision for the organization,” he said, adding that he did not want to impede that mission.

Masterson said he assumed the position with the knowledge that he wouldn’t be there long term. Formerly, he was an aide to Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, R-Santa Clarita.

“When the board approached me to fill in as interim president, I was happy to help and honored to fill the role for the organization,” Masterson said.

The former CEO, Larry Mankin, retired in March.

Masterson said he was pursuing other employment.

“I have some opportunities that I’m exploring,” he said. “I just don’t want to get specific at the moment.”

Gill, a Chamber board member and president of Integrated Property Services Group Inc., will fill the position on an interim, part-time basis. Gill also served as board chairman in 2008.

Gill came to the Santa Clarita Valley to manage the Valencia Town Center mall when it first opened in 1992. When the mall was sold to the Westfield Group, he opened his business to manage offices and retail buildings in SCV.

This is not the first time Gill has stepped up to fill an organizational gap in a leadership position. He served as interim director of the Small Business Development Center when former Director Paul de la Cerda left in 2008. He continues to serve the SBDC as an adviser.

John Shaffery, president of the Chamber Board of Directors, thanked Masterson for his dedication and expertise.

“Ed is a true friend of the business community, and we look forward to his continued involvement,” Shaffery said.
