A number of reasons

Proposition 8 deserved to be negated for any number of reasons, least not being that anything "religious" should never influence any legal standing on a state or federal level.

First and foremost, marriage is a legal contract, not a religious one. If churches don't want gays to marry, then don't marry them. You can "marry" all day long in front of a pulpit, but until those papers are signed off by the state, "those marriages" do not exist.

The most religious persons I've known have appreciated that distinction when they've sought out a divorce when their religion forbode it.
