Santa Clarita Christian’s Chris Fechtelkotter, front, gets hit by First Lutheran’s Alex Kimble on Saturday at Valencia High.

It only took half a game for the Santa Clarita Christian School football team to prove that it can still score and win despite losing all but two starters from last season's team.

The Cardinals mercy-ruled the visiting First Lutheran Falcons 52-6 at Paul A. Priesz Stadium on Saturday night.

"I'm very pleased with the intensity of the guys. They came out ready to play," said SCCS head coach Garrick Moss. "I'm happy with the execution of the offense, and I couldn't be happier to get the win."

SCCS's Chris Fechtelkotter played well on both sides of the field, scoring four touchdowns. Fechtelkotter had three touchdown receptions for 34, 10 and 38 yards. He also intercepted two passes, running one back 18 yards to the end zone.

Moss went with both Mark Hovey and Conner Harvey at quarterback, but both saw limited time on the field, as Moss said he wanted to give others an opportunity to play.

Hovey was 3-for-5 for 58 yards, including two touchdown passes to Fechtelkotter.

Harvey finished 3-for-4 for 81 yards, including a 34-yard score to Fechtelkotter.

Daniel Green scored two touchdowns for the Cardinals (1-0) on runs of 8 yards and 20 yards, and Luke Asher ran for a 13-yard touchdown.

Trailing 52-0 with 6:16 left in the half, First Lutheran (0-1) scored on a 20-yard run by Josh Walker. The two-point conversion attempt failed and the mercy-rule ended the game at halftime.

The Cardinals held First Lutheran to just 101 yards of offense.

Falcons' quarterback Jason Velasquez was 2-for-9 for 25 yards and threw two interceptions. Walker carried the ball nine times for 39 yards.
