As an instructor at College of the Canyons, I read your article "Waitlisted" (Aug. 31) with some interest.

I am very grateful that you discussed the problems fairly and with a great deal of context. I do want to add how proud I am of my college and of this community as we go through this. I have seen the college administration put its very best foot forward during this crisis.

Every sacrifice I have seen at the college has been to benefit students. Classes that faculty love to teach but that are major-specific or underenrolled have been canceled so that students can get the units they need to transfer.

Faculty at other schools have complained bitterly about these cuts. My colleagues rolled their sleeves up and went to work. Many have added students they don't need to add because they care so much.

I am also very proud of the community. Instead of complaining over things beyond our control, students have also rolled up their sleeves and gone to work, taking the classes that are available and making the most of the opportunities still available. As this semester is beginning, I am seeing a renewed sense of purpose in the students. They are aware of what they must do, and they are serious, studious and driven.

I am not happy that this is happening in a crisis, and that the light at the end of the tunnel isn't apparent yet, but I am certain that there will be a light, and that we will get through this together, and this makes me proud as a faculty member and as a citizen in the community.
