A Palmdale man arrested in Santa Clarita on residential burglary charges Monday tried to escape from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, but was caught by deputies before he could get away, according to a news release from the station.

In addition to felony burglary charges, Ryan Martinez, 20, now faces felony charges of attempted escape.

After his arrest, Martinez was placed in an a locked jail interview room at the station to wait until one of the burglary victims arrived, to possibly identify Martinez as a suspect.

When the victim was taken to the interview room, deputies saw Martinez was gone. They noticed a white chalky powder on the floor and determined he had removed ceiling tiles, entered the crawl space overhead, and replaced the tiles behind him.

Deputies surrounded and searched the building. Martinez was eventually seen running inside the building and recaptured.

Martinez did not get away en route to the Inmate Reception Center at the county jail in downtown Los Angeles. He is behind bars there, held in lieu of $130,000 bail pending his next court appearance.
