The city's economic development manager, Jason Crawford, received the 2008 New Economic Developer of the Year award, city officials announced Wednesday.

The International Economic Development Council selected Crawford for his achievement as a young, emerging leader in the economic development profession.

"Whether it's creating jobs through business development, or attracting events that bring in visitor dollars and are fun for our community ... my goal is to make Santa Clarita Southern California's ideal city to live, work and play," Crawford said in a statement.

Crawford, who was named economic development manager in 2007, has led several economic developments projects including coordinating tourism events such as the Amgen Tour of California, and the Santa Clarita Film Office.

"We are very proud of Jason and the work he has done here in Santa Clarita," City Manager Ken Pulskamp said in a statement. "This prestigious award is well-deserved and we look forward to seeing what Jason will do next."

Crawford was selected by a panel of economic development experts consisting of members from both the public and private sectors.

The award will be presented to Crawford at the organization's 2008 Annual Conference in Atlanta in October.
