2Day in History

Today is Monday, Sept. 6, the 249th day of 2010. There are 116 days left in the year. This is Labor Day.

Today’s Highlight in History:
On Sept. 6, 1970, Palestinian guerrillas seized control of three U.S.-bound jetliners. Two were later blown up on the ground in Jordan, along with a London-bound plane hijacked on Sept. 9; the fourth plane was destroyed on the ground in Egypt. (In all cases, the hostages were removed prior to the blasts, and there was no loss of life.)

Ten years ago:  The Millennium Summit, the largest gathering of world leaders to that time, convened at the United Nations.

Five years ago: The California Legislature became the first legislative body in the nation to approve same-sex marriages, but Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger later vetoed the bill.

GPS finds stolen iPhones
MADISON, Wisconsin (AP) — Apparently a Madison thief isn’t that familiar with iPhones.

A 19-year-old man is accused of stealing two of the smart phones from a display near the front of an Apple store in Madison Thursday.

When police responded about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, an employee was already tracking the phones, which have GPS technology. The phones appeared as blue dots on a computer screen as they moved on the Beltline, John Nolen Drive, Park Street and Fish Hatchery Road before stopping at a convenience store.

The Wisconsin State Journal reported that an officer then notified that local district, which dispatched an officer who saw the suspect pumping gas. The phones were located inside a van, and the Madison man was arrested.’

Bean there, done that: Ala. wins world record
PINSON, Alabama (AP) — Alabama has bagged one more championship title: largest pot of baked beans.

The Guinness Book of World Records awarded the Alabama Butterbean Festival on Saturday with the record.

The Pinson festival boasted 1,010 gallons of butterbeans in a 4-foot tall, 7-foot wide metal pot constructed by area businesses. The pot weighed about 1,000 pounds.

The beans were sold to festival visitors after the record was confirmed.

Rochester collects 35,000 cigarette butts
ROCHESTER, Minnesota (AP) — The city of Rochester didn’t like cigarette butts laying around, so it did something about it.

They started “A Litter Butt Better” anti-litter campaign and collected more than 35,000 cigarette butts this year.

The Rochester Post-Bulletin reports that 21 volunteers collected butts from 10 sites in three passes between March 17 and July 31. The city also distributed 350 free pocket ashtrays, which are rubber containers for used cigarettes.

The group organizing the 2011 program will meet Sept. 21.

Cow chips throwers compete in Prairie du Sac
PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wisconsin (AP) — They are going to throw some cow poop around this weekend in south central Wisconsin.

It’s for the Wisconsin State Cow Chip Throw in Prairie du Sac, which is in its 36th year.

Area business get their own competition Friday night, with children competing on Saturday morning and adults launching them on Saturday afternoon.

Organizer Russell Ballweg says about 120 men and 80 women usually participate, with the current record being 248 feet. The winner gets a trophy and a chance to attend the national competition in Beaver, Okla.

Ballweg says organizers pick up cow pies from a nearby farm two months before and then let the sun dry them out. In order to be in throwing shape, they have to be six inches in diameter.

Goodwill collection box turns up inert grenade
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Just in case it wasn’t clear: Weapons and drugs don’t make good charitable donations.

Albuquerque police briefly evacuated a Goodwill store Thursday after someone left a pistol, ammunition, a grenade and some marijuana in a collection box.

Police spokeswoman Nadine Hamby says the police bomb squad took the grenade away for demolition after determining it was a World War II-style inert — or inactive — grenade.
